Intergenerational solidarity. Preliminary report from international comparative research Value of children and intergenerational solidarity Institutionalized solidarity in welfare state can not fully substitute spontaneous solidarity between generations. In international comparison with German population the Czech population still shows higher rate of intergenerational solidarity. In all generations we can observe very close daughter′s relation to mother. By the youngest generation this relationship is stronger in comparison with relation to father, by the middle generation the difference between parents is getting smaller, relation to mother is marked as more intimate though. There is a significant difference from the German population: middle generation in Germany only very rarely lives with oldest generation in one household. In Germany mothers expect from their children less help in the future than Czech mothers. Neither in Czech nor in German population expectations from son and daughter are different. Although in Germany parents most often expect from children psychical support, it is not so much like by Czech parents. Very significant difference between Germany and the Czech Republic is in care in old age; Czech mothers much more often expect from their daughters and sons that they will take care of them when they are old. |
