Annotation This research report based on the research carried out in march 2007 by The National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) and the Australian National Council on Drugs (ANCD) aimed at issues involved in drug detection and screening in the school setting. In undertaking this review, NCETA endeavoured to achieve a broad and comprehensive coverage of relevant issues related to (1) prevention and school drug education, including the protective and enhancing roles schools can play; (2) drug testing in various contexts; (3) the efficacy of screening and detectiontests; (4) the cost of implementation; (5) ethical and legal matters; and (6) prevalenceof drug use by school-aged children. I n particular, we have examined the available data on drug use by school-aged children and, in particular, high-risk groups of children, assessed the evidence of the effectiveness of biometric and psychometric tests critiqued evidence on the effectiveness of tests to deter or reduce drugs and anyassociated potential adverse outcomes, examined the cost implications of the implementation of various forms of testing, covered the ethical, legal and practical implications of testing school-aged children, incorporated the views and perspectives of professionals, parents and community members through a submissions proces and an online survey, addressed the range of alternative strategies available to tackle drug use among school-aged children and the evidence base of effectiveness
