Annotation	The dissertation focuses on the problems of at risk children living in institutional care. Ultimately it deals with the development of social skills in children that will be necessary for their successful integration into a self reliant life after leaving the institution. The theoretical part aims to provide a complex view of the problems of at risk children with respect to up to date terminology, transformations and changes in the care system, the psychological aspects of the social development of a child with trauma experience, as well as the possibilities contained within special educational intervention. The main goal of the research was to map the development of social skills of children in children’s homes, children’s homes with a school and educational institutions for children with behavioural problems. Additionally, findings about the functionality and the lack of social development of these children and focusing on further interventions were also components of the dissertation. Among other things we focused on a description of a social skills development practice, i.e. planning, methodological policy and setting aims with regards to development, etc. Taking into account the results of semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire survey, we have proposed a set of recommendations for the practice; further education of ethopedical workers, legislative as well as system changes and further research
