This thesis focuses on the problems of vulnerable children living in the institutional care. The thesis deals with the development of social skills of children indispensable for their successful integration into a self reliant life after leaving the institution. The theoretical part aims to provide a complex view on the problems with respect to contemporary terminology, transformations and changes in the social care system, psychological aspects of the social development of a child with trauma experience, as well as possibilities of special educational intervention. Main goal of an empirical part of the research was to map a development of social skills of children in children’s homes, children’s homes allied to a school and educational institutions for children with behavioural problems. At the base of semi-structured interviews and questionnaire survey, we have proposed a set of recommendations for the future praxis; further education of ethopedical workers, legislative and system changes as well as for a further research.
