Annotation This dissertation deals with the issues in motor skills in pre-school children. The first part of the dissertation introduces basic theoretical background in relation to motion, refers to developmental stages and principles in motor development, and deals with the functioning of the motor system. Motor ability and skills are defined as basic preconditions for successful motor performance. The issues related to the developmental disorders in coordination (dyspraxia) are also discussed. The second part of the dissertation introduces the actual research aimed at detecting motor weakening, especially in the area of coordination ability, in pre-school children. Therefore, a diagnostic screening tool was made in order to map the state of coordination abilities in pre-school children. The screening test helps to detect deficits in motor skills at an early stage.
