Annotation |
The presented dissertation deals with learning strategies amongst young learners. It aims to describe the learning strategies used in this target group of pupils and thus to contribute to the discussion about teaching strategies in the Czech Republic. Attention is also given to the role of the teacher as facilitator of learning strategies. The quantitative part of the research is based on hypotheses formulated on the basis of a thorough study of the body of research. The basic research tool for this part was a questionnaire for young learners and their teachers. The questionnaire was distributed to 202 pupils and 13 teachers in schools in the region of South Moravia. The gathered data were then processed in an electronic database. In the qualitative part, the results gathered in the quantitative part of the research are investigated more specifically by means of semi-structured interviews with pupils chosen for this part with carefully formulated criteria. The interviews were transcribed and analytically codified and categorised on the basis of pre-determined categories. One of the most significant conclusions is that young learners use all six groups of learning strategies which are classified by R. Oxford. However, they also use others, which should be also added to the system of classification. The results of both parts of the research were compared and critically evaluated and this was then used as a foundation to suggest further steps and solutions |
