Annotation | The thesis explored the girls' education during an era of a disappearing state society and an emerging modern civil society. It described the requirements related to a gendered role of a woman from tradesman middle status background, from burgess intelligentsia and partly also from lower class. It examined how these requirements influenced the process of girls' socialization at school and in the family. It focused on the town and provincial tradesmen because the education, schooling and the role of a woman from this background has not been yet sufficiently examined. The chapters based on the period literature and correspondence, the first chapter defined the requirements imposed on the female role and on the literacy level. The following chapters described the process of girls' socialization at school as well as the role of reading and religion for their education. The problems of education, schooling and a gendered female role was explored in a time period from the institution of the mandatory school attendance in 1774 to the school reform in 1868 ;it focused on the Bohemian territory. |
